Downtown Houston marks the center of Houston, TX. Downtown is centered around the major Interstates in the area including I-45, I-10, and Highway 59. Downtown boasts tall skyscrapers reaching upwards into the sky made up of large plates of glass. The old Enron Tower is one well know skyscraper, probably the most well known landmark in the immediate area. This building was actually purchased by Brookfield Properties Corporation in 2006 and subsequently they leased the entire building to Chevron. Continental Airlines headquarters also lies downtown as well. Another new convenience in the area is the Metro Light Rail.

The Light Rail travels from the North side of downtown all the way South into the Texas Medical Center. It carries an average boarding of over 40,000 passengers each weekday. The Houston Rockets and Houston Astros also make their home in the area. The teams play in the Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park respectively. In addition the Astros park used to be called Enron Field but as the company declared bankruptcy the name of the park was finally changed to its current name. The Verizon Wireless Theatre also lies downtown just off of Texas Avenue. It is a small indoor venue used for concerts and other events ;seating only a few thousand individuals.

However, it has a superb location compared to some other venues in Houston including the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The downtown area underwent major construction in preparation for the Super Bowl in 2004. Main roads were torn up and unfortunately many business closed their shops for business. And in September of 2008 Hurricane Ike came ashore as its eye passed right over downtown Houston. Large plates of glass from several of the skyscrapers blew out; leaving a dangerous hazard on the streets. Power shut down and fires broke out across the city. Downtown was shut down until order could be restored.
